The foundation stone was laid in the middle of the 19th century when the Higher Weaving School in Crefeld was founded, which became what is now the Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology at the university. Over the years, other higher technical schools were added, which have played a decisive role in today’s technical development at the university, including 1883 the Royal Weaving, Dyeing and Finishing School, 1904 the Crafts and Arts and Crafts School (Crefeld Art School) and 1958 the State engineering school for mechanical engineering. In the first 100 years until the middle of the 20th century, today’s departments of chemistry, textile and clothing technology as well as design were formative for the region. The departments of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and economics were added later. The departments of industrial engineering and health care were founded much later.
